Haese Mathematics IB: Used vs New — What Every IB Parent in India Needs to Know
Share
Ask any IB parent in India about textbook costs and Haese Mathematics will come up within the first thirty seconds. A single Haese Mathematics title — whether it is Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL or Applications and Interpretation SL — retails new for anywhere between ₹3,500 and ₹6,500. For a student doing the full IB Diploma, Maths alone can cost ₹5,000 to ₹8,000 in the first year.
Used Haese Mathematics books, on the other hand, are available for ₹1,200 to ₹2,800 depending on the title and condition. The savings are significant, and for a subject where the core concepts do not change edition to edition, buying used is almost always the smart choice.
The Full Haese Mathematics IB Range
Haese publishes separate titles for each IB Maths pathway. The current range for the 2019 syllabus (examined through 2025 and beyond) includes:
- Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL — Used by students taking the standard level academic maths pathway. The most commonly available used title in India.
- Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL — Higher level. Heavier content, higher new price, and equally good demand in the used market.
- Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL — The statistics and applied maths pathway. Less commonly available used but worth searching for.
- Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL — The least common of the four in the used market but available from larger used book sources.
- MYP 1 through MYP 5 Plus — The Middle Years Programme series. Used copies are especially valuable because MYP students use these over multiple years.

| AA HL (2019 edition) | ₹6,500 | ₹1,800–₹2,800 | Up to ₹4,700 |

Does the Edition Matter for IB Maths?
Yes and no. The 2019 Haese Mathematics editions were written specifically for the current IB syllabus, which runs until at least 2025. If you are buying for a student starting IB1 or IB2 right now, the 2019 edition is the one you want. Earlier editions (pre-2019) cover a different syllabus and should be avoided for current IB Diploma students.
For MYP students, editions change less frequently and older editions can often be used safely — but always confirm with your school first.
What to Look for in a Used Haese Book
Haese Mathematics books are heavy reference texts that students use constantly throughout the two-year IB Diploma. This means used copies see real wear. When buying used Haese, check:
- Spine integrity — Haese books are thick. Spines that have cracked completely can make the book awkward to use. A tight or slightly worn spine is fine.
- Pencil vs pen annotations — Pencil workings throughout are completely normal in a maths textbook and can be erased. Pen annotations are harder to work around.
- Completeness — Make sure all chapters and the index are present. Pages should not be torn or missing.
- Access codes — Some Haese editions come with online access codes. Used copies will usually have used or no access codes. For most students the physical book alone is sufficient, but confirm with your teacher if digital access is required.
Where to Buy Used Haese Mathematics Books in India
Used Haese Mathematics books are not easy to find through general second-hand channels. Most physical second-hand bookshops do not stock them. Your best options are:
- Specialist used academic bookstores online — At The Chapter Room, we stock Haese Mathematics titles across the MYP and Diploma range. Every copy is inspected and ships across India.
- IB parent communities — Facebook groups for parents of students at JBCN, DAIS, Oberoi International, NES, Ecole Mondiale, and other IB schools regularly have Haese books for sale. Quality is unverified.
- Your school's senior students — The most direct route. IB2 students finishing the Diploma in May have books they no longer need. Many schools facilitate this informally.
The Bottom Line
For a subject as consistent as IB Mathematics, there is no meaningful learning disadvantage to a used Haese textbook. The proofs are the same. The exercises are the same. The only difference is the price you pay and the condition of the cover.
Buy used, confirm the 2019 edition, check the spine, and get your child's IB Maths sorted before July when stock runs thin.
