Young adult fantasy novels with colourful spines on a shelf

Best YA Books Indian Readers Are Searching For — Shatter Me, Powerless, and More

Young adult fiction has a bigger adult readership than the label suggests. The YA books on this list are being searched by readers in their twenties and thirties as much as by teenagers — because great storytelling does not have an age limit, and these are genuinely great stories.

This list covers the most searched YA titles by Indian readers right now, with notes on what makes each one worth your time.

Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette has a lethal touch — literally. Her skin kills anyone she makes contact with. Locked away for years, she is suddenly the most valuable weapon in a dystopian regime's arsenal. The Shatter Me series runs six books (Shatter Me, Unravel Me, Ignite Me, Restore Me, Defy Me, Imagine Me) and has one of the most passionate fandoms in YA fiction.

What sets it apart is the prose style — lyrical, stream-of-consciousness, with words crossed out on the page as Juliette revises her own thoughts. The romance is intense and the world-building gets richer across the series.

Powerless by Lauren Roberts

One of the most buzzed-about YA fantasy debuts of recent years. In a kingdom where everyone has powers, Paedyn Gray is ordinary — and ordinary is punishable by death. She ends up in a deadly competition alongside the prince who should want her dead. Classic enemies-to-lovers fantasy romance with sharp writing and real stakes.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Pip Fitz-Amobi decides to investigate a closed murder case for her school project. The town believes it was solved five years ago. Pip does not. What she uncovers is darker than anything she expected.

This is the YA thriller that adult readers are recommending as enthusiastically as teenagers. Jackson writes like a journalist — the research feels real, the investigation builds logically, and the emotional stakes are genuine. There are two sequels (Good Girl, Bad Blood and As Good as Dead) that complete Pip's story.

Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber

For readers who have finished the Caraval trilogy and need more Garber. Evangeline Fox makes a deal with a mysterious prince of hearts to stop her true love's wedding — and steps into a story that is far more dangerous than she knew. The first in a new series (The Ballad of Never After follows).

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Jude was taken to Faerie as a child and has spent her life trying to earn a place in a world that does not want her. One of the best faerie books ever written — genuinely dark, politically complex, with a female protagonist who is flawed and brilliant. The Folk of the Air trilogy is complete and all three books are worth reading.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

A heist novel set in a fantasy world inspired by Amsterdam's golden age. Six criminals with different skills. One impossible job. Bardugo's plot construction is masterful and the ensemble cast is one of the best in YA fantasy. If you have not read it, do not let the Grishaverse fandom intimidate you — Six of Crows works completely as a standalone entry point.

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

A poor girl is left a fortune by a billionaire she never met, on the condition that she live in his mansion with his four grandsons. The story is a mystery built around puzzles and codes. Fast, clever, and surprisingly difficult to put down for what sounds like a straightforward premise.

Windy City Series by Liz Tomforde

Sports romance that has become huge on BookTok. Set in the world of Chicago professional sports, with found family themes and real emotional depth beneath the romance. The series currently runs three books and each works as a standalone.
